Umzimuhle Mining Community Receives a Clinic

Orkney in Matlosana – Mining communities in the North West Province are some of the hotspots for health service delivery.  This has been evident over the years as informal settlements and townships continue to grow closer to mines.

The reality is that people live their homes to come closer to mines in search for employment.  At the same time, wherever the people settle, there is a need to provide basic services to such communities and health care is always among the first demands.  This is the case with Umzimuhle, a township in Orkney where North West Health MEC Madoda Sambatha has just officially opened a clinic to ensure access to health care services.

“Our aim is to deliver quality health services to our people, and this we can achieve only if we all work together for a common good.  We need mines to partner with us particularly in providing health services to communities in mining areas”, MEC Sambatha said.

MEC Sambatha encouraged everyone to play a part. He said that health is not just a departmental or Government Issue but society in general must play a part.  Everyone including NGOs, FBOs, Civil Society, Public and Private sectors must play a role in making it a success.

As a mining community, the clinic has been named after Buzile Nzima who was a member of the National Union of Mineworkers having worked for Anglo American.  He also worked for Arm Gold where he became a Manager.  His ability to grow also landed him the responsibility of being Regional Education Chairperson.  Nzima was also the ANC Chairperson in ward 21.
