NORTH WEST HEALTH DEPARTMENT REVISES SCOPE OF WORK FOR CONTRACTED PRIVATE AMBULANCES

The Department of Health has revised the scope of work for contracted private ambulance service providers, Buthelezi EMS and High Care EMS following the purchase and subsequent registration of 40 new ambulances.

The Department had contracted the two service providers to do inter facility transfers to allow state ambulances to focus on emergencies.

Effective from 1 June 2018, contracted private ambulance service providers will only respond to cases as and when called to do so by authorized personnel within the Department. Private ambulance service providers will only be utilized in the event when provincial state resources are over stretched.

Emergency Medical Service District Coordinators have been tasked with the responsibility to make such determination.

In the event that the provincial EMS ambulance in a specific area is busy or does not have the correct level of qualified staff, the EMS coordinator may take the decision to utilize services of private ambulance providers. Any deviation from the revised scope must be done in consultation with the manager responsible for emergency services in the province.
