Special Symposium: Diseases of the eyes as a result of increase of people who are avoidably blind.

North West Province- Klerksdorp- Hospitals, District and Sub district are hereby invited to Ophthalmology Symposium organised by Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital Complex under the auspices of North West Dept of Health to be held on the 23rd October 2014, at EMRS College in Orkney, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District.  The symposium is as a result of the number of individuals who are avoidably blind increasing; making avoidable blindness a public health problem.

80% of blindness is avoidable either through prevention or through treatment. Cataracts cause blindness but the blindness can be avoided by removing the Cataract during a small operation which takes place less than 30 minutes.

The purpose of the Symposium is to aggressively create awareness about diseases of the eyes in the province. According to vision 2020 objectives, cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness in our community. Yet, blindness can be prevented by performing cataract surgery. The benefit of doing cataract surgery is to restore sight and prevent blindness.
The symposium will cover topic like, examination of the eye, visual acquity, Ocular emergencies, Ocular trauma, acute red eyes, and chronic diseases associated with eye diseases.
