New Council for North West College of Nursing sworn into office

North West MEC for Health Dr Magome Masike has officially inaugurated the new council for North West College of Nursing that will serve for a period of three (3) years. The new council will serve North West College of Nursing which comprises of two government nursing campuses based in Mahikeng and Klerksdorp. The college is tasked with training and producing nurses for the public health facilities.

The inauguration is a platform for the MEC to convey his expectation and council members' roles and responsibilities.

"I want you to understand that our common role should be to assist the college to produce nurses who will add value to the health care system and take the nursing profession back to its former glory," said MEC Masike.

The council which comprises of representatives from communities, union, student council and managers from the Department of Health will amongst others advise the Member of Executive Council on nursing education policies and ensuring effective management of campuses.

Speaking during the inauguration held   on Tuesday, 07 July 2015 in Mahikeng MEC Masike expressed his gratitude to the outgoing interim council for the work done. Masike also congratulated the new council members on their appointed.

Mine worker beats extreme drug resistance TB

The North West Department of Health has made yet another breakthrough in the treatment and management of Extreme Drug Resistance Tuberculosis (XDR TB). The XDR TB Unit situated at the Klerksdorp Tshepong Hospital Complex had this month confirmed that three more XDR TB patients have been completely cured.

In a first of its kind, Mine Workers Unions, AMCU (Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union), and NUM (National Union of Mineworkers), came together with mining houses, Tau Lekoa, and Anglo Gold Ashanti and agreed to a concerted effort in creating a safe and TB free work environment at the mines.

Health Deputy Minister to lead the Healthy Lifestyle Day Commemoration Programme

The Deputy Minister of Health Dr Joe Phaahla and the MEC for Health in North West Dr Magome Masike invites you to join them on Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Day. The Healthy Lifestyle Day is globally commemorated during the month of February annually to raise awareness on the importance of healthy lifestyles practices, especially with a focus on regular physical activity. Physical inactivity among communities is one of the leading risk factors that cause hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). There’s an urgent need to reduce NCDs by addressing the four key underlying risk factors like physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, tobacco use, alcohol consumption and safe sex.

The health promotion activities will be held in Tlokwe Sub-District on the 20th of February 2015 as follows:

  •     Visit to the ICDM clinic by the Deputy Minister, MEC for Health and officials;
  •     Healthy Lifestyles Dialogues with community members;
  •     Physical Activity programmes; and
  •     Health Screening Services.

Mahikeng – The MEC for Health in the North West Province, Dr Magome Masike has toady 16 February met with the Mahikeng Local Municipality Mayor Gosiame Seatlholo in what is a first of its kind meeting between the Department and the Municipality. The meeting which is the initiative of the Municipality brought to the fore issues of health service delivery which the communities of villages and locations around Mahikeng have raised with the Mayor during the various community meetings and the Integrated Development Plan consultations forums.
