ABOUT THE EXCELSIUS NURSING COLLEGE
VISION
To facilitate physical, psychological, social and spiritual wholeness for all people of the North West Province through the provision of innovative nursing education and training.
MISSION
The college will strive towards preparing a nursing student through innovative dynamic nursing education and training in order to become a reflective, critical analytical thinker and a professional leader in striving towards wholeness.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NURSING
WHAT COURSES WILL I STUDY?
A nursing student can typically expect to study anatomy and physiology, behavioural sciences, disease entities, pharmacology, nursing diagnosis and treatment of patients among others.
DO I NEED TO DO ANY COMMUNITY SERVICE AFTER COMPLETION?
After completion of studies, new nurses are required to complete a one year remunerated community service at a public health facility before entering the workforce.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A NURSING DEGREE AND A DIPLOMA?
After four years of study, students from the college and university graduate as Professional Nurses. The main difference between the diploma and the degrees is the academic level at which students complete their studies.
A B. Cur graduate will have an advantage when it comes to career development and specializing in a certain field of nursing. Bridging courses are available for college graduates to “top-up” their qualifications to a degree level to facilitate future career development.
A nursing training college provides a viable alternative to the student who is unable to afford university fees and provides the added advantage of allowing a student to study whilst being remunerated for the practical work. A university student is required to study full time.
NURSING AS A CAREER OF CHOICE
Nursing is widely acknowledged as an essential component of healthcare delivery systems and offers exciting and varied career opportunities for those interested in providing health care to a community.
Nurses are required to provide care to individuals, groups and communities using their acquired knowledge, skills and personal aptitudes. Nursing profession is regulated by the South African Nursing Council which is a Statutory Health Professional Council.
In the North West Province, Excelsius Nursing College provides nursing education and training that is nationally and internationally comparable. This is achieved by the application of appropriate teaching strategies and integration of new technologies.
The main campus is situated at Klerksdorp and is affiliated with North West University– Potchefstroom campus. This affiliation assigns to the University campus the status of a moderating body for the academic standards of the college. The college operates as Nursing Education Institution under the North West Provincial Department of Health.

Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery (D4)
Grade 12/ Senior Certificate with English and Biology/ physiology not less than a “D” symbol on Standard Grade and “E” Symbol on Higher Grade. For Matriculants before 2007.

Grade 12 NSC (National Senior Certificate) Matriculants after 2008 a level four (4) (50-59%) or more in any of the following subjects: English, Home Language, Life Science and any two approved NSC Subjects
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS IN NURSING SCHOOLS
Matric Certificate (Senior Certificate) with English a “D” Symbol Biology and Physical Sciences will add as an advantage.
RECOGNITION PRIOR LEARNING:
ENROLLED NURSE: 4 points and 3 years experience to add to a Grade 12 qualification with less than 18 points.
ENROLLED NURSE AUXILIARY:
3 points and a 3 year experience to add a Grade 12 qualification with less than 18 points.
